EXCERPT FROM THE STUDIO: July 30, 2025

"But Matthew, why does it feel like Picasso's Blue Period?"

It's a reasonable question, and you're right. I studied Picasso extensively in creating this series, and for good reason.

If you want to paint like Picasso, you don't study Picasso. You must study the masters who showed him the way. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted Moulin de la Galette in 1889, and Picasso created his own version in 1900. He learns about composition, atmosphere, and motion right before his Blue Period, and it shows up in all of the work

Picasso studied great art to make great art. He needed the tools to express himself with the precision necessary for a real impact. And it worked. Through every phase of his life, and through every major evolution in his work, Picasso found influences from others and took the best bits in pursuit of his own artistic fluency.

Like Picasso with his muses, from Fernande to Dora Maar to Jacqueline, each relationship brought new artistic discoveries. Each partner revealed different aspects of his creative vision, pushing him into new periods and new ways of seeing.

I don't claim to be Picasso. I haven't earned that right. But I am his student. In learning to communicate my thoughts and feelings through paint, I've looked to the masters so that I might learn to speak this visual language.
