Visual Artist, Author, and Storyteller

Matthew Olivier (born February 1, 1991, in Toronto, Canada) is a visual artist, author, and storyteller whose work brings classical technique into dialogue with present-day culture. Known for his emotionally nuanced paintings and quiet attention to the human experience, Olivier has emerged as one of the most widely recognized and talked-about voices in visual art today.

His practice is rooted in the study of art history and foundational technique, shaped by close observation and formal discipline. But just as often, it’s about using those tools to make sense of the present—what it means to think, feel, and slow down in an overstimulated world. His paintings are restrained in gesture, but open to feeling; grounded in structure, but always looking outward.

Since launching his professional career in 2020, Olivier has established himself as an artist whose presence continues to grow across contemporary painting. While oil painting remains central to his work, he also moves between writing, creating a multidisciplinary practice that spans both classical paintings and a modern narrative.

Cultural Reach and Influence

In 2023, Olivier launched ALGORITHM, a large-scale digital installation that braids painting, short-form storytelling, and video media. Conceived as a way to bring art into everyday life, the project has reached hundreds of millions of viewers and led to institutional collaborations including M+ in Hong Kong, the Munch Museum in Oslo, Palazzo Maffei in Verona, NMWA in Washington, MSK Gent in Gent and major brands like Dior and Hugo Boss. At its core, ALGORITHM reflects Olivier’s belief that art should be widely seen, genuinely experienced, and unbound by the limitations of tradition.
