The first-ever in-museum installation of Codex Algorithm. In collaboration with Woodmere Art Museum, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia — with the patronage of Dennis Alter, Trustee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Five works from Woodmere’s permanent collection have been added to Codex Algorithm, each read as a chapter of the work. Woodmere has installed tablet computers beside the selected paintings throughout its galleries, inviting visitors to watch, listen, and engage with the essays while standing before the original artworks — the work extended beyond the feed, into a gallery, for the first time.
The installation carries the Codex’s argument into the museum itself: historical paintings as predecessors of the contemporary feed, where images are selected, framed, and circulated within systems designed to capture attention. The patronage of Dennis Alter — whose earlier commission of The Philadelphia Museum of Art Manuscript established the Codex’s relationship with the city — continues that thread in Philadelphia.
